The Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden is one of the oldest and most traditional orchestras in the world and was founded by Elector Moritz of Saxony in 1548. Its conductors have included Heinrich Schütz, Johann Adolf Hasse, Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner.

The Sächsische Staatskapelle is based in the Semper Opera House and performs in around 250 opera and ballet performances each season. In addition, there are about 50 symphonic and chamber music concerts as well as performances in Dresden's Frauenkirche. As one of the most sought-after symphony orchestras internationally, the Staatskapelle regularly makes guest appearances in the world's major music centres.
