About 1,500 animals in 250 species live here. One focus of the Dresden Zoo is the animals of Asia, which are represented by predatory and small cats as well as ungulates. Another focus is the monkeys, which attracted visitors even in the zoo's founding days. The story of the orangutan child Bushi and his mother Suma, a wild-caught monkey, became famous worldwide. Bushi was born during the crossing from Sumatra to Europe and was the world's first ever hand-reared orangutan baby.
Guided tours and the chance to get up close to your favourite animal for an hour are highly recommended. Children are also in good hands at Dresden Zoo: playgrounds, zoo school, zookaspar, pony rides and petting zoo await the little visitors. Don't be surprised if a cheeky sparrow suddenly crosses your path during a walk through the zoo, because native animals also feel right at home here.
