The Kunstfonds collection encompasses more than 23,000 works of all media of the visual arts including painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography, applied art, concept art, video art and installation art as well as art in the public realm. The two chief emphases of the collection – the significant stock of art from the German Democratic Republic and the outstanding holdings of contemporary art of Saxony, which since 1992 have been systematically expanded through annual purchases by the Free State of Saxony as a form of support for artists – permit a comprehensive overview of the art of Saxony from the twentieth century to the immediate present.
